Rotary AIDS Project Child AIDS Prevention

WORLD AIDS DAY
December 1, 2014

Welcome to our first e-newsletter!

We'll offer this update at least once a month to let you know what your support is achieving for Child AIDS Prevention — CAP. In between eNewsletters you can stay current with our activities, including the 25th anniversary of the Los Altos Rotary AIDS Project, through our Facebook page.

Our vision for babies in Africa

CAP's mission is to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS. Our method includes identification to increase awareness in the villages, AIDS education for women of child-bearing age, HIV testing of pregnant women, counseling of HIV positive women, and finally treatment before and after childbirth during the breastfeeding period. Your contribution will save babies' lives.

New partnership with Save the Children

Save The ChildrenFive Los Altos Rotarians traveled to Washington, D.C. Oct. 24 to plan with our new partner, Save the Children Federation, the largest international organization focusing on child and maternal health.

The Rotary/Save the Children planning team includes (left to right) Steve Pomeroy, Marlene Cowan, Diana Myers (SC), Susan O'Halloran (SC), Dr. Kechi Achebe (SC), Rich Casey, Allan Varni, Kellie McDonald (SC), and Dr. Jack Higgins.

The Ebola outbreak in west Africa, which seems to be slowing, has delayed our work. However, we believe Save's effort to curtail the Ebola outbreak is urgent. We'll report more on progress in Liberia when the Save staff can come up for air.

Next step? With Save we discussed which country to focus CAP efforts on next. The final decision will be announced soon in our e-newsletter.

The Challenge for Children

Here we share the sobering facts learned from Dr. Kechi Achebe at Save the Children US this month. The children's need is overwhelming!

Together let's work to Prevent Mother-To-Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS (PMTCT).
